How AI Advances The Design Process

A sketched chair transformed a visual, perfect for pitching.

From Sketch to Statement Chair

Early in this project, I began a perspective drawing of a new chair, inspired from fine details of designer chairs, such as the engineering of metal rods as a base that distributes weight and extended backrests and armrests for ergonomic support and comfortability. Reviving this project years later, I sought out to improve this concept with today's technology.

Tools

  1. Midjourney AI (concept recreation)
  2. ChatGPT (photo-editing)

Leveraging these tools accelerated the communication phase with visuals. Instead of spending hours building a rough digital model, I used a way to iterate the form within a shortened amount of time. By using this method, pitches and concepts can be received rapidly and easily. This allows for quick feedback for iterations before returning to CAD softwares for a more intentional design.

Outcome

AI-assisted concepting isn’t a substitute for 3D modeling, but it’s a powerful companion to visualize multiple directions, pitch early designs, or explore broad aesthetic variations in a compressed timeframe. The speed of iteration lets me focus my energy on broad decision-making and visual refinement. I can also use AI to explain how I would execute certain details into a CAD-software, learning and creating simultaneously. As a UX designer expanding into physical product work, this workflow bridges the gap: I continue sharpening my CAD skills while using AI tools to enhance clarity, visual storytelling, and concept communication. It allows me to articulate ideas at the fidelity needed for critique, moving at a timely pace before the design is ready for full modeling.
