A Bag That Might Change The Weather

Your typical clutch with a spark of wonder.

Merging Two Disiplines

Nowadays in design, the possibilities are quite endless, especially when technology becomes part of the creative process. Fashion has always intrigued me, but I never thought to incorporate my skills in technology into my curiosity in fashion design. This project became a bridge between disciplines: a space where what I was learning in one area sparked innovation in another, making a handbag inspired by movement, nature, and robotics.

I wanted to create an accessory that didn’t just hold items but interacted with its user in a way that felt almost alive. The materials and components were selected for their reliability, structural integrity, and minimal footprint, allowing the internal mechanics to function smoothly without overwhelming the limited space of a handheld accessory.

Materials Used:

  1. Plywood
  2. 3D Printed PLA
  3. Resin
  4. Servo motors
  5. Light Sensors
  6. Fabric

The most challenging, and rewarding, part of this build was engineering the mechanism that would bring the butterfly wings to life. I explored multiple motion systems, prototyping with both stepper motors and servos to understand their movement profiles, spatial requirements, and integration potential. After several iterations, I ultimately selected micro servos, as their range of motion allowed the butterfly bodies to sit flush against the surface of the clutch without compromising the silhouette. This decision also enabled me to conceal the mechanical components cleanly within the interior, preserving the elegance of the exterior while maintaining reliable, controlled movement.

Final Thoughts

Imagine you're sat at a dinner table, with your clutch beside you, you reach in for your wallet and as the bag opens, the adornments of resting butterflies begin to flutter— almost emerging from your accessory. It's graceful, mesmerizing, and unexpected. It becomes a moment of quiet awe, a tiny performance that greets you and the people around you. It captures attention without demanding it, and that’s what I love most about this piece: its ability to communicate without words, offering an experience that’s both intimate and unforgettable. For some, it becomes an icebreaker. For others, a point of curiosity. But for everyone, it’s a reminder that technology can be emotional—an invitation to rethink what fashion accessories can become when imagination, engineering, and storytelling come together.
